Avoca is located 180 kilometres to the north west of Melbourne. The town has a rich gold mining history and was one of the first goldfields in the north western part of Victoria. The township retains many of the old buildings that were developed around the time of the gold rush and now hosts a series of cafes, galleries and shops for the tourist. In addition, the surrounding area has dozens of wineries which can provide a relaxing post ride environment for a meal and drink.

Mountain biking is predominantly located in the state forest to the west of town and these trails have hosted a number of marathon mountain biking events run by Big Hill Events who have upgraded the trails in the area. Bancoora.com extends its thanks to Alan Tregidgo from Big Hill Events for the information below in relation to the Avoca trails.

Trail Information

The Avoca trails were upgraded by Big Hill events as part of the running of the events on this circuit and also because one of the Big Hill Events directors (Rohin) grew up in the area and has been restoring the trail as part of a personal project under consultation with the DEPI.

Below is a map of the two trails that have been upgraded. Click on the map or here to get a better resolution version.

The Rohin Loop (shown in red on the map) is currently in good condition but the Mark Loop (shown in blue on the map) currently needs some work. These trails form part of a greater network of trails including fire trails which were used to make the 100km Marathon Challenge course for the annual Big Hills Event in the area. This event has currently been discontinued as people were finding the course too difficult to complete but may be repeated at some time in the future.

The map for the discontinued Marathon Challenge course shown below can be located here or by clicking on the image below if you want to ride outside of Rohins Loop.

If you're into running, Big Hill Events are now running a 7km and 21 km trail running event based around the Mt Avoca winery which will be undertaken in November of each year. For details, click here.
