Ballan

Ballan is located 80 kms west of Melbourne and is one of the towns bypassed by the Western Freeway when it was constructed leaving a nice quiet town with good facilities.

The state forest to the south west of town has a lot of fire trails through it but it also has a large number of motor cycle trails through the bush. Unlike the moto trails in the Lerderderg / Wombat Forest area, these are relatively flat and so they don't getted ripped up as much making for good riding trails. There are only a few motor cyclists in the area and you can hear them coming a mile off so there are no issues in riding out there. Having said that, there are a variety of trails that do get pretty ripped up and weathered so you get a good variety of trails.

Danny Halstead notified me of this little gem and we have been exploring this area on a few occasions. He estimates there is about 70 kms of trails in this forest and that is quite believeable as we regularly clock up 20 km rides in the area. Danny has documented a lot of the trails as segments on Strava. Click on the trail overview link below to get a map of the area. Further trails have been discovered since the map was developed.
